Which Dermal Filler is Right for Me?

If you need to rejuvenate your appearance, dermal fillers are a great alternative to cosmetic surgery. With so many options on the market, it is difficult to know which dermal filler is right for me?

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are temporary cosmetic injectables that are used to combat signs of aging, and rejuvenate the face. They smooth fine lines and wrinkles and also add volume to depressed areas. Dermal fillers are non-invasive treatments consisting of a few simple injections into the targeted area.

Which Dermal Filler is Right For Me?

The dermal filler that’s right for you will depend on your specific situation and aesthetic goals. Not every dermal filler will be useful for everyone, and that’s why it’s so important to consult with a medical practitioner with the necessary experience administering a variety of dermal fillers.

Below are 3 popular dermal fillers used for facial rejuvenation – Restylane, Radiesse, and Sculptra.

If you need to smooth out facial lines and wrinkles, Restylane is a good choice. Restylane is FDA approved for treating superficial to moderate facial lines and wrinkles such as frown lines, smoker’s lines, and nasolabial folds. It can also be used to augment the lips.

Restylane is derived from hyaluronic acid, which is a substance that the skin naturally produces to help keep it firm. Restylane does not contain any animal products.

Facial rejuvenation with Restylane takes 30-45 minutes on average, and possible side-effects include bruising, swelling, and redness. The results of Restylane can be seen immediately after treatment, and the effects typically last 6-12 months.

Radiesse is also an effective dermal filler for facial wrinkles and folds. It can be used to soften nasolabial folds, marionette lines, chin wrinkles, and the corners of the mouth. It can also be used to add volume to the back of the hands.

Radiesse is made up of calcium based microspheres that are suspended in a water-based gel. Unlike other fillers that last 6-12 months on average, Radiesse can last up to 2 years.

When injected, Radiesse works below the skin to add volume, and it also stimulates the production of collagen, and this contributes to the long-lasting results.   Radiesse treatment takes about 15 minutes to complete, and results can be seen right away. There may be some slight bruising, swelling, and redness after treatment, but these side-effects only last a few days.

Sculptra is a dermal filler that can be used to smooth both shallow and deep facial wrinkles. It is especially beneficial for nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and chin wrinkles. It is derived from Poly-L-lactic acid, a synthetic substance that is absorbed by the body over time.

Sculptra works within the dermal layer of the skin to stimulate the formation of the body’s natural collagen, and this improves the fullness of the face over time. It typically requires a series of 3 treatments to achieve the best results with Sculptra.

The results of Sculptra are not immediate, but they are long-lasting. Improvements will be seen gradually over the course of treatments, and can last for up to 2 years.

After treatment there may be some minor swelling, bruising, or redness as well as pain at the injection site. These symptoms typically resolve within a few days.

The choice of filler will depend on the degree of correction required. If you have superficial wrinkles then Restylane may be the right treatment for you, but if you have deeper folds and creases that need correction, Sculptra may be more appropriate.

Although it’s important to choose the right filler, the skill and experience of the injector is also vital. Patients should be careful to select an injector that knows which filler to use and where to use it. This will minimize possible complications, and ensure that you get the natural looking results you desire.
