Two popular breast enhancement procedures are the breast lift and breast augmentation, but they are very different. If you would like to improve the appearance of your breasts, you want to make sure you get the best possible results. It’s therefore important to know the differences when deciding whether to get a breast lift or implants.
Breast lift surgery (mastopexy), is a procedure that is done to elevate sagging breasts. A lift is also done to reduce an enlarged areola, which is the darker area of skin that surrounds the nipple of the breasts. Breast lift surgery is carried out under general anesthesia. During the procedure, the surgeon will eliminate excess skin that is causing the breasts to sag, while tightening the breast tissue. This will lift the breasts and also improve their shape.
Breast augmentation (breast enlargement), typically involves the placement of breast implants to make the breasts fuller and larger. Silicone or saline implants are the most common types of breast implants. Breast augmentation surgery is carried out under general anesthesia, and may be done using a variety of techniques including the following:
- Trans-Umbilical (TUBA) Method: This is a scarless breast augmentation in which the implants are introduced via the umbilicus or belly button. It is considered a safe, effective technique that has fewer complications than some of the more traditional methods.
- Inframammary Method: With this method, the incision is made under the breast in the inframammary fold, which is the area just under the breast where it connects to the chest.
- Periareolar Method: The incision for this method is made on the outer edge of the areola, and this helps to disguise the scar after healing.
Should I Get a Breast Lift or Implants?
Breast lift surgery is best for women with breasts that are droopy and saggy, along with nipples that point downward. Mastopexy will reposition the breasts to a more youthful position on the chest wall, and make them firmer and fuller.
Breast augmentation is designed for women that are dissatisfied with the size and shape of their breasts. The procedure will make the breasts fuller and shapelier. However, it’s important to choose breast implants that will give you the desired proportion.
Breast augmentation can also correct asymmetry. Asymmetrical breasts are usually due to differences in shape and volume. Breast augmentation can vastly improve symmetry, and create a more even-looking cleavage. Breast rejuvenation may require a breast lift or implants. Women that desire an increase in cup size, but also need to raise and firm their breasts, may require a combination of both procedures.
