Lip Reduction Surgery
It seems as though it was only yesterday everyone was pining after that famous Kylie Jenner pout, but the latest research shows that big lips may be going out of style. Are lip reduction surgeries the new trend?
Recently, this surgery has become quite popular with women in many Asian countries, as thinner lips are perceived to be more attractive. The procedure leaves the top lip slimmer and slightly more curved. The overall lip is meant to resemble a slightly thinner take on the Cupid’s bow.
The surgery is a little more invasive than your average lip enhancement. The patient is placed under local anesthetic, and each individual lip can take about 15-30 minutes to alter. An incision is made across the full length of the lip, along the dry-wet line, and the desired amount of skin is then removed.
The price for a lip reduction surgery can range anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000. Some can cost up to $7,000 depending on the clinic or surgeon you choose. The most important aspect to caution is that, unlike lip enhancements, this type of surgery is irreversible.
Recovery typically takes about a week. The stitches will usually dissolve, or if necessary can be removed once the incision has healed. During the recovery period, the patient can expect to be in a bit of pain, accompanied by minor swelling and bruising. Soft foods are usually recommended during the healing process.
What Does the ASPS Have to Say?
Currently, lip plumping procedures are all the rage, but according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 2016 revealed an increase of 283% in lip reduction surgeries. That means 3,547 more procedures were performed than in 2015. In contrast, however, the number of lip augmentation procedures increased in the United States by 28,430 in 2016.
It’s safe to say you can keep puckering up for now!
