Discussions about vaginal rejuvenation are no longer taboo and are becoming increasingly popular. However, some women are still unsure about this type of surgery, and so they ask their doctors – What exactly is labiaplasty, and how much does a labiaplasty cost typically?
What is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty refers to surgery that is done to reduce the inner lips of the vagina. The vagina consists of inner lips known as the labia minora, and the outer lips known as the labia majora.
The length of the inner lips and outer lips are usually about the same, but for some women, the inner lips of the vagina are loose and on the longer side. As a result, it may even create a slight bulge when they wear certain types of clothing.
There are women that are born with longer labia minora, but the condition may also occur as a result of pregnancy or aging. Women that are uncomfortable with the overhang of the vaginal skin they may choose to undergo labiaplasty to reconfigure the labia minora, and correct the problem of excess tissue.
The reasons why women are choosing to do labiaplasty are varied. Some do it purely for aesthetic reasons, because they don’t like the way they look, and feel self-conscious during times of intimacy. However, there are others who choose to have the procedure done because of functional issues. The excess skin is often a source of irritation and causes them pain and discomfort when doing some activities like riding a bike or during intercourse.
Labiaplasty can be done on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia, or local anesthesia with sedation and takes about an hour to complete. During the operation, the surgeon will trim the excess skin to the desired size, while ensuring that the labia minora maintains its function and sensation. The labial skin is then closed.
Labiaplasty does not normally disrupt the natural contours and pigmentation of the labia minora. A skilled and experienced surgeon will ensure that these are preserved.
What is the Recovery Time for a Labiaplasty?
There are few risks and complications associated with labiaplasty. However, patients can expect to experience some bruising and swelling during recovery and are therefore advised to get sufficient rest for the first 2-3 days after the operation. Doctors recommend bed rest during this time.
Most women are able to resume normal activities about 2-3 weeks after surgery but can return to work after about 1 week. Sexual intercourse should not be restarted until the area is fully healed usually taking about 6 weeks. There is usually only minimal scarring with labiaplasty and the scars are virtually undetectable after healing.
What Does A Labiaplasty Cost?
As is the case with other surgical procedures, Labiaplasty costs can varies based on your geographic location, surgeon’s fees, and the type of anesthesia. There are also several other factors that will influence cost including the amount of work the surgeon has to do to address your specific concerns, and anesthesia is used. The labiaplasty cost range is typically from $3,000-$5,000.
How Labiaplasty can Benefit You
There is a high level of patient satisfaction after labiaplasty, as women are usually happy to have the lips of the vagina tight, and tucked in. Some women say that doing the procedure is a big boost to their sexual confidence and also enhances comfort. If your labial skin protrudes and causes pain or irritation during your daily activities, you may benefit from a labiaplasty. The procedure can also be done to correct asymmetry in the labia minora.
