National Survey Results: Top Three Body Sculpting Options
A national survey of dermatologic surgeons of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) revealed that fat-freezing was the most popular body sculpting option. “Fat-freezing” made up 100,000 of the reported 230,000 body sculpting procedures performed in 2015. For example, fat-freezing with CoolSculpting to reduce pockets of fat on the body. The second most popular body sculpting option was radiofrequency at 66,000, followed by tumescent liposuction and laser lipolysis.
Fat-Freezing with CoolSculpting
“Patients want results without the downtime, and CoolSculpting offers just that,” says Dr. Richard Buckley from MilfordMD Cosmetic Dermatology Surgery & Laser Center. CoolSculpting is a non-invasive fat-reduction procedure, by the parent company Zeltiq. Furthermore, it allows physicians to contour body areas without any surgery nor incisions to access the fat.
Years ago, Harvard University scientists noticed that some children who ate popsicles got dimples in their cheeks. They soon realized that the popsicles were freezing and eliminating small pockets of fat cells. As a result, they created and trademarked, Cryolipolysis. By freezing fat cells, they crystallize and die. The body responds by naturally eliminating the dead cells.
“At this point, CoolSculpting is a tried-and-true approach to non-invasive body sculpting,” Dr. Buckley says. “Studies have been done on thousands of patients and more than 2 million CoolSculpting treatments have been done worldwide. We now have hundreds of satisfied patients who have had the CoolSculpting procedure.”
Fat Removal Alternatives
CoolSculpting is limited in the amount of fat it can remove in one session. CoolSculpting is not a weight loss treatment. It is ideal for smaller areas of fat removal such as around the chin, belly, love handles and thighs.
“We can achieve more dramatic body sculpting results with laser liposculpture,” says Dr. Buckley. “The tradeoff is there is some minimal recovery involved versus none with CoolSculpting.” Patients can lose as much as one gallon of fat with each liposculpture session. Laser liposculpture options include the Cynosure SmartLipo Triplex and Sciton’s ProLipo. Laser liposculpture is a minimally invasive procedure, with local tumescent anesthesia to gently insert small cannulas under the skin to permanently suction out pockets of unwanted fat.
Liposculpture can address many areas of concern such as the face, chin, neck, breasts, chest, arms, back, abdomen, love handles, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, calves, and ankles. It can even uncover muscle tone such as six-pack abs.
For those who want to rid pockets of fat without recovery time should consider other options such as fat-freezing with CoolSculpting.
