5 Steps to Choosing the Right Plastic Surgeon

Undergoing any type of plastic surgery can be risky. It is always a good idea to do your research to make sure you’re in the right hands. Ensuring your surgeon is qualified to conduct your procedure not only limits the risk of complications, but also helps you achieve the results you desire.

The following steps can help you make sure you choose the right plastic surgeon.

  1. Ensure Your Plastic Surgeon is Certified.

Ensuring that your plastic surgeon is certified either through a board or society of plastic surgeons is very important. Not all states or provinces require surgeons to register to practice plastic/cosmetic procedures or acquire the training for it. At times general physicians or surgeons may perform procedures for extra income. Although they may be excellent doctors, this doesn’t mean they’re qualified to perform these intricate procedures. The American Board of Plastic Surgeons (ABPS) and Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons (CSPS) are good examples of exclusive groups, which ensure surgeons have received the proper training in their specializations, and have the education to practice safe, ethical, and successful procedures.

  1. Ensure Your Plastic Surgeon is Specialized.

You wouldn’t want to go to see a cardiologist if you have a knee injury, so why should the same rule not apply to plastic surgery? Surgeons are very knowledgeable; however, working on different parts of the body requires different training. Rhinoplasty, a surgery performed on the nose, which is made up of bone and cartilage, is very different from a breast augmentation. Breast augmentations deal with mostly fatty tissue. Although the right plastic surgeon can be skilled in procedures, don’t be afraid to put them in the hot seat. Ask them what experience, or training, they’ve received with the procedure. Also, ask them how many times they’ve performed a particular procedure.

  1. Be Sure to Compare Past Results.

The easiest way to distinguish whether one surgeon may be more suitable than another is to speak to previous patients. You can easily get a sense of what to expect by asking someone who’s already gone through the procedure. Ask them if they’re happy with their results and if their expectations were met.  Another great idea is to look at before and after photos of patients who are within the same age range, and who have similar body types. Ask yourself if the results are consistent.

  1. Do You Get Along With Your Surgeon?

Your relationship with your surgeon is extremely important. You need to ensure that your plastic surgeon will not only perform a successful surgery, but that you will feel comfortable throughout the process. Are you confident that they will advise the right surgery plan for you? Are they giving you unrealistic expectations? Are you comfortable divulging your medical records? Scheduling a consultation is a crucial step in getting to know your surgeon, and it’s a great way to gauge how they will behave both throughout and after the surgery.

  1. If the Price Seems Too Good to be True, it Probably is…

Although some clinics do offer legitimate promotions, it’s important to do your homework when a clinic is offering any deals or discounts on plastic surgeries. The “discount” price may not include hidden fees. The clinic may be desperate for patients for multiple reasons. The surgical procedures or equipment may not be up to date, or non-compliant. The surgeon could be in training or lacking the necessary skills.

Here are some other quick tips to always keep in mind:

  • Don’t be afraid to consult your family physician for their recommendations.
  • Be cautious when attempting multiple procedures at once in order to limit complications.
  • Make sure your surgeon has a “plan B” if complications do occur during your procedure.
  • Customer service is key! Ensure that you not only feel comfortable with your surgeon, but with the clinic staff as well.
