If you’ve decided to have breast augmentation surgery, you’re probably curious about what to expect during your first visit with the surgeon. The initial consultation with your plastic surgeon is your chance to find out all you can about the procedure, meet the staff and decide if the surgeon is the right one for you. So, if you’re not sure what to expect during your breast augmentation consultation, the information below is for you.
By the time your first consultation comes around, you ought to have already done some research about your plastic surgeon. Most importantly, you should ensure that he/she is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) because that is a confirmation of his/her training credentials and expertise.
You should also do some reading about breast augmentation, and take along a list of questions about the procedure that you would like the surgeon to answer. It’s also a good idea to carry a photo of what you’d like your breasts to look like after breast enhancement, so the surgeon has some idea of your goal.
What To Expect During Breast Augmentation
You can expect to have a full medical check-up that includes a breast examination. Your surgeon will also discuss your medical history, as this will have an impact on your suitability for the procedure.
Learn About the Procedure
The consultation is also the setting where you can ask the surgeon all those pre-prepared questions so that you can learn as much as possible about breast enhancement. Be sure to include questions about the following:
- type of anesthesia
- surgical technique that will be used
- location of incisions
- recovery period
- possible risks and complications
- what type of results to expect
- ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos of previous patients.
Breast Implants – Types, Sizes, and Placement
One of the most important considerations with breast augmentation is the type of implants that will be used. Breast implants are available in various sizes and shapes, with the main types being silicone-filled and saline-filled implants. Your surgeon will likely discuss the pros and cons of both types and also review any possible complications that can occur.
The size of the implants is also very important to the outcome of your breast augmentation procedure. Breast enhancement procedures look more natural when the breast implant chosen complements the shape and figure of the patient. Implants that are too large look fake and unnatural.
Deciding on the most appropriate breast shape and size has traditionally been done with the use of breast implant sizers. However, at Song Plastic Surgery, Irvine, CA, we use the state of the art Illusio imaging system instead.
Illusio Imaging System
Illusio is a 3D imaging system that uses augmented reality software technology to help patients accurately visualize their post-operative results, with various breast sizes and types of implants.
Illusio is described as a ‘virtual mirror,’ because it provides 3D images of a patient’s breasts. The image is mounted on a flat screen display and patients can move around for optimal effect, as the image moves with them. The image of the face and body allows the surgeon and patient to see what the breasts would look like with various implant shapes and sizes.
Placement of the Implants
The placement of the breast implant is another matter that will be discussed. The implants can either be placed subglandular or submuscular. With subglandular placement the breast implants are placed below the breast tissue, but above the pectoralis major muscles (chest muscle). Submuscular placement puts the implants below the chest muscle.
Anyone undergoing plastic surgery should have reasonable expectations of the procedure. Consequently, your surgeon will probably ask you why you’ve decided to have breast augmentation and also discuss your expectations.
Although breast augmentation is a very common cosmetic procedure in the US, it is important that patients carefully consider the pros and cons of the procedure, and make an informed decision.
