  • Dear sonja306,

The cause of repeated and ongoing scratching is usually an underlying form of dermatitis or rarely psychological conditions.

In these circumstances the skin pathologies need to be ruled out and my best advice would be to encourage your co-worker to seek the consultation services of a certified dermatologist with expertise in skin pathology such as this.

Names of dermatologists can be found on the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario website or your co-worker can ask for a referral from her family doctor. You could also find a dermatologist on CosMedicList.

Generally, if it is a form of dermatitis contact causes should be ruled out and then inflammatory conditions need to be ruled out and may require a small skin punch biopsy.  Usually topical steroids with or without fluorination can usually provide long-term control, but the diagnosis must be made first.

I hope this information has been of some assistance.
