  • In general a good candidate for a tummy tuck is an individual who has one or more of the degenerative changes that can occur to a tummy following weight loss/weight gain, childbearing, age or any combination of these three things.  A typical and standard tummy tuck consists of removal of excess skin, the creation of a new or more attractive belly button and tightening of lax tummy muscles that may be spread apart.  The tummy muscle repair is called rectus abdominis plication.  There are many different types of tummy tuck, however, those individuals with good core strength and muscle tone and a reasonably placed belly button can undergo a mini skin only tummy tuck. Individuals who have a significant amount of fat on their abdominal wall and good skin tone can undergo liposuction, usually an advanced form of liposuction such as BodyTite or SmartLipo together with a small skin only skin pinch tummy tuck.  Other patients with stretch marks, loose skin and very little fat can undergo a skin pinch tummy tuck with laser treatment to the stretch marks.
Individuals with extra fat on the flanks and love handles can undergo a tummy tuck combined with advanced modern versions of liposuction of the hip and flanks and thighs.
Patients who have undergone massive weight loss generally have muscle laxity, the need for a new belly button and there is so much loose skin that an extended tummy tuck where the incision is carried beyond the confines of above the pubic hair and the groin crease past the sides of the hips may need to be performed.
As you can see there are many varieties of tummy tuck surgery.  Generally, this is not covered by the manage care plans in the various provinces as it is a cosmetic treatment.  There are, however, different forms of financing available such as Medicard and iFinance Canada. I hope this information has been of some assistance and best of luck.
