Thinking about lip fillers

Question posted by Jordyn L. from Saskatchewan, Canada

I was looking into getting lip fillers, but I am worried about the side effects. Will there be swelling or scarring? What are the risks?

  • Dear Jordyn,  Volumization of the lips or soft tissue fillers into the lips is an excellent way to enhance lip shape and volume.  There are several categories of lip fillers; those that involve reversible sugar gels called the Hyaluronic acid molecules such as Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane and Tiosol are commonly deployed.  These can be simply injected with a small blunt tip micro cannula with very little swelling or bruising.  Significant risks or complications are extremely rare and the volume in the lip will last 8-12 months.

Lip augmentation with fat grafting can also be performed.  This has the advantage of no allergic reaction and a somewhat longer result.  However, resorption of the fat grafts can occur and significant swelling is a side effect.

Seeking an experienced injection physician with years of experience and the options to offer you all the various filler possibilities would be your next step.

I hope this information is of some assistance and best of luck.

  • Lip fillers are an increasingly popular request. Hyaluronic acid fillers are very commonly used for lip enhancement but they do pose some risk of an allergic reaction or healing with uneven areas of firmness. Generally the fillers are very good but most are not permanent. I prefer to use fat injection techniques which uses a patient’s own body fat to enhance lip volume. It’s more of a surgical procedure requiring some recovery time, but I think it provides the softest, most natural, permanent result. Best of all, there is no chance an allergy because we use do not use any foreign material.
