Hello Portia, Thank you for your question. There has always been a lot of media and discussion about the safety of silicone implants versus saline; Even years after studies disproved the theory that leaking silicone implants caused other health problems the concern still carries weight. Thankfully as with any science, progress happens and silicone implants now are cohesive — that is to say that if they were to break or rupture (which is rare), they are like a gummy bear on the inside not liquid. Although saline implants are still widely available and chosen by patients, cohesive gel implants tend to have less rippling of the implant edges than saline and a softer, more natural feel and appearance. The risk of developing a hardened capsule around the implant (capsular contracture) is also decreased with cohesive gel. Your Board Certified Plastic Surgeon can help you make the personal choice that works best for you and your aesthetic goals. Best of Luck, Dr. K.
