I sweat ALOT! Way more than normal under the arms. Is there a medical reason for this?

  • Dear kissifier19,

Thank you for your clinical post.  Excessive sweating is a very common aesthetic clinical presentation.  There is no precise physiologic or anatomic reason for excess sweating that we know
of.  It is not because you’re too anxious or too nervous or that you lack proper hygiene.  It is just a biological variation and excess sweating can occur when at rest or in repose, but generally increases during periods of activity or anxiety.

This hyper responsiveness to the sweating reflex can be socially embarrassing as unsightly stains can appear and can often ruin expensive blouses, shirts and dresses.

The treatment for excessive sweating has been revolutionized over the past 10 years with the use of Botox.  Botox injected as an outpatient easily and effectively into both armpits can significantly reduce the amount of sweating by 90-100%.  This sweating reduction will last between 9-12 months.  Most patients will then present again for yearly injections to control the degree of excessive sweating.

The advantage of Botox it is simple and relatively no risk and very effective.  The disadvantage is you have to keep performing this and over many years it can get quite cumulatively expensive.

The range of treatment depends on the number of units used, but generally 50-100 units of Botox is used in each armpit and the cost can be anywhere from $1,500.00 to $2,000.00.

One of the more cost effective permanent solutions over the past few years has been the appearance of the MiraDry.  I’ve been using the MiraDry at SpaMedica now for several years and this device is used to emit safe gentle microwaves into the armpit with the use of a simple applicator that is passed over the skin of the axilla.  The microwaves permanently deactivate the sweat glands and result in a permanent reduction of sweat.  Most patients require two treatments 6-9 weeks apart and most patients report over 90% reduction and measured out over years.
This treatment is preformed under local anesthesia and patients can return home immediately.  Side effects include some redness and swelling (similar to the feeling you have after sunburn) which resolves over several days to a week.

The MiraDry is very popular for its permanency and efficacy and is reasonably affordable when considering the price of each Botox injection.

I hope this information has been of some assistance and best of luck.
