How can I manage my expectations about results of my possible brow lift?

Question posted by Stephanie from Canada

I am wondering if I can expect similar results to the after pictures of patients or is dependant on the individual? I am also wondering if I can do anything prior to surgery that would help with the healing process.

  • Dear Stephanie,Thank you for your clinical post and this is an excellent question.  How to best anticipate the outcomes of one’s surgery and selecting the right procedure for the right patient, our common goals of both your certified cosmetic plastic surgeon and the patient.  In general, looking at before and after photos can be helpful, however, every patient is unique in their anatomy both static and dynamic. Doing your consultation for a potential brow lift withor without an upper lid blepharoplasty your certified cosmetic plastic surgeon will carefully examine your skin and anatomy including the bony structures, your hair pattern and the strength of your depressors and excess upper lid skin.  In addition, also review carefully what your expectations will be.  In my practice I use extensively a mirror and show patients the kind of results that they can expect at 3-6 months following the surgery.  The small areas and ports where a small telescope is inserted to perform the brow lift is shown to the patients and generally two small 1.5 centimetre incisions in the side hairlines are all that are needed to reposition the brown with modern techniques.  An endoscopic brow lift with or without an upper lid blepharoplasty can often be performed under local anesthesia in approximately one hour.  The recovery time for this procedure is in the order of 7-10 days depending on your tissues and your propensity to bruising and swelling.
Steps can be taken to optimize healing pre-operatively by eliminating sources of either medications or food supplements that can increase bruising and bleeding such as Aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories and even naturopathic foods such as Echinacea, Garlic, Ginkgo and Ginger.

A good healthy diet prior to the surgery and cessation of smoking three weeks before can also facilitate and enhance healing.

An endoscopic brow lift with or without an upper blepharoplasty can provide a significant natural, fresh rejuvenation and reduce the look of being tired or sad and provide a very natural fresh and alert look without creating that artificial “deer in the headlight appearance”.

By repeatedly showing patients the kind of results that you can expect in the mirror over the past 20 years of performing endoscopic brow lifts, I have been able to achieve very natural results that leave patients looking fresh and rested.

I hope this information has been of some assistance and best of luck.
