Does fat come back after liposuction?

Question posted by Annalise from MTL

I’m thinking of getting liposuction to get rid of the fat around my arm pit area. I can’t get rid of it no matter how much I exercise. Is it true that when you get liposuction the fat cells never grow back? I’m worried that I’ll have the procedure and then the fat will come back eventually if I gain any weight.

  • Dear Annalise,

Thank you for your clinical post and a
common question of all liposuction patients.
It is important to note that after liposuction the fat cells that have
been removed are gone forever and will not under any circumstance return.  However, consumption of excess carbohydrates
will result in weight deposition.  The
fat will redeposit it into areas where there are still fat cells.  Some of the fat cells in your liposuction
zone will grow and ruin some of your contour while the majority of excess
carbohydrate will be stored as fat in other areas where you traditionally did
not gain weight.  Thus, many liposuction
patients who gain weight experience body contour distortions and collections
that they are not used to and can be quite unhappy with.

Thus, it is extremely important that
you have a weight maintenance leading to and following cosmetic surgery
involving liposuction to protect your investment and your soft tissue shape and
    contour.

There are new and high-tech ways to
form liposuction using radio frequency energy called BodyTite or a laser called
SmartLipo or even ultrasound called Vaser Lipo, which can be less traumatic
with improved soft tissue contours compared to traditional liposuction
    techniques.

I’m sure you’ll get an excellent
result.  Simply ensure you’ve gotten to
your ideal body weight or reasonable weight for you to maintain and you should
    get an excellent result.

I hope this information is of some
    assistance and best of luck.
