Fat under the chin also known as a double chin is a feature that many people struggle with, and surgery is often not an option they’re willing to consider. These clients may be good candidates for Kybella, a cosmetic injectable that melts away your double chin, without surgery or downtime. But are those Kybella results permanent.
A double chin is often a feature of overweight individuals, and occurs as a result of enlarged fat cells. Some people simply have a genetic predisposition to develop the condition and regardless of how trim they are, the double chin persists. Fat under the chin is usually resistant to diet and exercise.
What is Kybella?
Kybella is a lipo dissolving injectable that reduces submental fullness (fat under the chin) in multiple treatments. Kybella is derived from deoxycholic acid, which is a substance that is naturally produced by the body and is used to help break up dietary fat.
How Does it Work?
When Kybella is injected under the chin, it disrupts the walls of the fat cells. causing the cells to release the fatty contents. The body will then metabolize the fat as normal, eliminating it. When injected correctly, Kybella will not affect any of the healthy cells that surround the submental fat, or any of the nerves and muscles.
Kybella treatment is done on an outpatient basis and usually takes 4-6 sessions spaced about 4 weeks apart, to achieve the desired results. However, the number of treatments required will depend on the amount of fat that needs to be dissolved. Treatment time ranges from 15 to 20 minutes.
Is it Painful?
Patients will feel some discomfort when the drug is being injected, but this is usually tolerable if pain medication is given prior to the start of the procedure.
Are There any Side Effects?
After Kybella treatment patients can expect to have some swelling, tenderness, and redness at the injection site. These symptoms typically take about 2-3 days to resolve. However there are differences in how patients recover, and this is influenced by how much fat you have under the chin, and how much Kybella is used to treat it.
There are some possible complications, but as long as Kybella is injected by a properly trained physician, these are not likely to occur.
What Type of Results can you Expect?
Most patients will see a significant reduction in fat, and there will therefore be a noticeable improvement in the chin profile. There is also some slight lifting and very minimal tightening of the skin in the area.
Most people who have undergone the procedure have noticed a huge difference in the appearance of their chin.
Are Kybella Results Permanent?
The fat cells that are treated by Kybella are no longer viable, so the results achieved with Kybella are permanent. Kybella ruptures the fat cells and once they are destroyed they are no longer able to accumulate fat. However, if you do gain weight at any time the remaining fat cells will get larger. But this will not be as obvious in the treated area, because there are fewer fat cells. In order to maintain the results after Kybella, individuals will need to maintain a lifestyle of healthy eating and regular exercise.
Are you a Good Candidate?
Kybella is generally recommended for people with moderate to severe submental fullness, but the results are better if you have minimal skin laxity. It is not recommend for people with excessive skin in the chin area along with submental fullness, because when the fat dissolves you will be left with a lot of loose skin.
If you are considering Kybella treatment, be sure to consult with a qualified surgeon, to determine if you would be a good candidate for the procedure.
